Book Description
Health & Economic Status of Older Women does not duplicate any existing resources in the gerontology field. Although older women may constitute a statistical majority of the older population, they continue to be an undersampled minority. The significance of sex differences has not only been overlooked in writing, but also in the production of data resources.
The book itself is the direct result of an invitational conference of nationally known researchers held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Conference discussions informed the participants of the choice of topics and identified many research gaps which needed to be filled. This book can and should be thought of as a starting point as it is hoped that through this volume investigators will be stimulated to develop and implement new directions in research.
The authors focus on major methodological issues, calling attention to some contradictory findings and draw attention to the need for different and/or more sophisticated approaches to research about older women. Although aging processes are universal, there are physical and social aspects of gender of particular concern. This is why this text is so important. This volume represents a selective review of health and economic issues and how they relate to older women. It spells out many research issues needing investigation and major resources for doing so, as well as providing new ways of looking at traditional research problems.
