Editorial Reviews
Review
“A model of thoroughness in compilation, analysis, and cross-reference, this annotated bibliography was compiled by a medical librarian and a library science faculty member. About 1,200 government publications and 100 databases from some 90 federal agencies, institutes, and information centers are described. Most nonserial publications are dated 1980 or late except in the `History of Medicine' chapter. The first eight chapters describe the structure of government publishing and give advice on accessing the resources; treated are depository collections, NTIS, health statistics, health databases, federal agencies, laws and regulations, patents, and general medicine. Chapters 9 through 46 are alphabetically arranged by subject, from `Accidents and Injuries' through `Women's Health.' A 28-page index lists individual titles with their entry numbers. Written for the researcher, this is an excellent quick reference for depository libraries and a useful selection tool for libraries that seek it.”–Choice
“A wide range of government resources is described in Federal Information Sources in Health and Medicine. In addition to substantial subject bibliographies, compiler Mary Glen Chitty includes information on finding, using, and obtaining government sources. The guide annotates over 1,100 government publications from about 90 federal agencies and also discusses close to 100 databases. The array of topics covers a number of timely issues, including the aged and aging, biotechnology, environmental health, minority health, and women's health. Each of the 39 subject sections is arranged by type of publication. Some examples of materials cited are federal laws, statistics, and reports. Two appendixes listing addresses and discontinued publications and a subject index round out the 328-page volume.”–Library Journal
“This bibliography is a valuable collection development tool. Medical librarians in institutions of all sizes, small hospital library to academic health center library, can use this bibliography as a check list to evaluate their present government document holdings. Item annotations provide a guideline for informed acquisition decisions. No other publication brings together such detailed information on government publications in the medical and health sciences field. The authors have cut a pathway through the maze of government publications.”–Medical Reference Services Quarterly
