Manual Handling in Health and Social Care: An A-Z of Law and Practice

Editorial Reviews
Book Description
A practical understanding of the law relating to the lifting and handling of disabled and older people is essential not only for health and social care staff and managers in the statutory and voluntary sectors but for all those involved in 'hands-on' care of patients, clients and pupils. Manual Handling in Health and Social Care presents an accessible overview of the United Kingdom's manual handling case law and the legal implications and practical issues involved.

Michael Mandelstam's new book provides a summary of key legislation in Scotland, as well as in England and Wales. It deals with the issue of manual handling in the wider contexts of health and safety legislation, and of community care and NHS legislation. The main body of the book is in A-Z format and is fully cross-referenced, allowing the reader to look up particular issues for quick access to the information needed. Topics covered include guidelines on health and safety, including back care; handling of children in schools; policy and procedure coordination within and between organizations; and equipment provision.

Addressing the tensions between legislation, health and safety and the needs of service users, this book provides professionals, managers and front-line staff with an understanding of law as a useful and practical tool to assist in solutions to manual handling problems. It is a much-needed resource for all health, education, voluntary and social care organizations and staff whose work involves manual handling.
