Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices
Editorial Reviews
Review
“This tightly written book is a concise, coherent, and authoritative treatise of fair employment practices and their bases in law.... Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices is a scholarly tour de force which does not detract one whit from its value to and benefits for practitioners, human resources managers, policy connoiseurs and legislative staffs at all levels of governmental bureaucracies.”–Contemporary Psychology
“Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices is a non-technical resource for human-resource professionals on non-discriminatory testing and selection procedures....Equal -employment-opportunity and affirmative-action officers and organizational attorneys who may be called upon to develop or validate selection and promotion procedures or answer legal complaints and suits will find this a helpful text and "guide to the guidelines".”–The Diversity Factor
“Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices will be a valuable addition to the reference shelves of attorneys, human resource managers, and assessment reform advocates. Written by industrial psychologist Richard Barrett, the book clearly explains many current testing controversies in nonpsychometric terms....This book will be a useful tool for everyone working to tear down these barriers to equal employment opportunity.”–Fair Test Examiner
“Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices is a scholarly tour deforce which does not detract one whit from its value to and benefits for practitioners, human resources managers, policy wonks, and litigators. The book is as useful for doctoral students as it is for policy connoisseurs and legislative staffs at all levels of govermental bureaucracies....If I were organizing a conference on this subject, Barrett would be my choice as the keynot speaker, and if I were engaged in fair employment practices litigation, I would move heaven and earth to make sure that he was on my team.”–Comtemporary Psychology APA Review of Books
Book Description
Dr. Barrett offers a two-pronged approach to testing procedures in employee selection. First he describes tests that are most effective in identifying qualified job candidates. Second, he shows how to use them in ways that will produce the desired results while minimizing an adverse impact on minorities, women, or older and disabled workers. Since Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and related laws went into effect, many myths have sprung up with regard to what employers can and cannot do when they hire and promote -- and Barrett explains them here. In doing so, he provides tested, legally sanctioned methods that will not only improve the quality of a company's workforce, but also instill the confidence needed to manage the human resource function ethically and equitably. This is a necessary resource for human resource professionals and in some cases, their attorneys as well.
