Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin won the 1991 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as well as BAFTA and WGA nominations for Best Original Screenplay. His classic script mixes fantasy, thrills, and romance with a healthy dose of humor. The story is about a young man who suffers an untimely and unnatural death. In his ghostly state, he learns that he was the victim of foul play. When he tries to warn his grieving girlfriend that she is also in danger, a con-artist/psychic turns out to be the only one who can convey his messages. Actress Whoopi Goldberg reignited her career with her performance in the film and won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress. The film also received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture.
